Parfum, EDP, EDT & EDC: What the Concentrations Mean

Understand the common fragrance format names without turning them into rigid performance promises.

QUICK TAKEAWAY

Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Cologne generally describe fragrance formats with different typical concentration ranges, but the finished formula matters more than the label alone.

Fragrance names such as Parfum, Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette are useful shorthand, but they are often misunderstood as a simple “strong to weak” ranking.

What the labels are trying to communicate

These terms usually refer to the style and concentration range of the aromatic composition in the finished fragrance. There is no single universal formula that makes every EDP behave the same way.

Parfum

Often positioned as a richer or more concentrated format. It may wear close to the skin or feel very full depending on the materials used.

Eau de Parfum

A common modern format that often balances presence and wearability. Many everyday and evening fragrances use EDP.

Eau de Toilette

Often designed with a lighter or fresher profile, though some EDT formulas can still feel very noticeable.

Eau de Cologne

Traditionally associated with lighter, refreshing styles, especially citrus-led compositions.

Why concentration does not guarantee exact longevity

The materials, structure, skin, weather and application all influence performance. A bright formula can feel more noticeable early on, while a softer base-heavy perfume may stay closer to the skin for longer.

How should you choose?

Choose the fragrance you enjoy in the context you will wear it. Use concentration as one piece of information, not as a promise of a specific number of hours.
